I hate The Academy Awards vol. 2

ugh well here’s a definitive list of who will win, who should win and who should have been nominated or whatever I don’t even care anymore

whatever

HERE YE, HERE YE!! It’s Oscar morning! Why did I wake up early to have my entire day ruined right at the start? Because I’m a slut for these types of things! Some good things happened (KNIVES OUT!!!), some bad things happened (TODD PHILLIPS), but overall, how did everything turn out??!! Let’s get into it:

BEST PICTURE

Nominees: Once Upon a time…in Hollywood, The Irishman, Parasite, 1917, Jojo Rabbit, Marriage Story, Little Women, Ford v. Ferrari, 1917

Who will win?

Around the time of November, I saw a tweet from Sean Fennessey declaring that 1917 was going to disrupt awards season in the sense that it would win everything. It wasn’t so much a proclamation for how good it was, but how Oscar baity it was. The Academy loves Sam Mendes for some reason, and it may not be the clear front runner right now, but it is a step ahead of the competition. Where it’s both in the technical aspects, and it being a war movie (something The Academy loves), watch it take home the hardware that night.

Who should win?

There is no question the competition should be between Marriage Story and Little Women. Two better movies could not have been made by two extraordinary filmmakers. Both incorporate emotional themes of family while being so rich in their approaches. Marriage Story was my favorite of 2019 but Little Women is a once in a lifetime movie that should take home everything.

Who should have been nominated?

Parasite, Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood, The Farewell, Parasite, Marriage Story, Little Women, Knives Out, Ad Astra

BEST DIRECTOR

Nominees: Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, Todd Phillips, Bong Joon-Ho, Sam Mendes

Who will win?

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing us that Todd Phillips really thought he did something with Joker. The sentiments that I wrote about in the above for Best Picture remain the same for Director. Sam Mendes crafted 1917 into a never before seen type of experience for a war movie, and transcended how we view wartime epics. However, will The Academy finally give Tarantino the Oscar? Or will they do what is right and give Bong Joon-Ho? My bets are probably safe with Sam Mendes but I gotta be honest, I give most of the credit to Roger Deakins for making 1917 great.

Who should win?

Bong Joon-Ho. There is no other person worthy of that title in this category. Everyone loves Scorsese (and for good reason), but Parasite was a joyous ride that was carefully crafted into a modern day masterpiece and if Bong wasn’t at the helm then it would not have been what it was.

Who should have been nominated?

Greta Gerwig, Noah Baumbach, Lulu Wang, Bong Joon-Ho, Quentin Tarantino

BEST ACTOR

Nominees: Joaquin Phoenix, Leonardo DiCaprio, Antonio Banderas, Jonathan Pryce and Adam Driver

Who will win?

The Academy does not like being talked about in a negative light. They believe they are the highest of the high and believe they should receive nothing but respect from everyone. So, if a nominee or anyone talks bad about them, they never forget. Flashback to The Oscars in 2013 when Joaquin Phoenix was nominated and lost out to Daniel Day-Lewis. Many thought (including myself) that Phoenix should have won. However, he pissed off The Academy so they gave his Oscar to DDL. Flash forward now to 2020, and Phoenix is nominated again, coming off a rampant acceptance speech at The Golden Globes about how all award shows are just long TV ads for the networks. Will The Academy forgive Phoenix, the clear frontrunner, and award him his first Oscar? Time will tell, but at this point, it’s Joaquin Phoenix’s to lose.

Who should win?

There is no question Adam Driver is the best actor of his generation. If everything was right in this world, Adam Driver would be walking home with his first Oscar after giving what I believe was one of the best performances of ALL TIME in Marriage Story. Don’t get it twisted though, Joaquin Phoenix is my favorite actor but I don’t think his portrayal of Joker stacks up with what Adam Driver was able to do in Marriage Story.

Who should have been nominated?

Adam Driver, Leonardo DiCaprio, Antonio Banderas, Robert Pattinson, Adam Sandler

BEST ACTRESS

Nominees: Scarlett Johanson, Renne Zellweger, Charlize Therone, Cynthia Erivo and Saoirse Ronan

Who will win?

Lol. Ok so I don’t have much to say about this category. This is when it all went to shit lmao. So Renne Zellweger will probably win because The Academy loves biopic performances for some reason. This whole category is one big “????” I mean Therone?? Who??? But it’s whatever.

Who should win?

Awkwafina but she wasn’t even nominated. So the next best nominee would be Saoirse Ronan for Little Women. Her performance felt like a warm hug and I love her so much.

Who should have been nominated?

Saoirse Ronan, Awkwafina, Renne Zellweger Scarlett Johanson, Cynthia Erivo

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

Nominees: Knives Out, Marriage Story, Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood, Parasite and 1917

Who will win?

Let me give a shout out to THE MAN, THE KING RIAN JOHNSON I WAS FR CRYING AT 8:30 THIS MORNING!!!! This is most likely the toughest category in a long time. Not even to predict who will win, but who was even going to get in? 1917, like Dunkirk, has little to no dialogue but the story is so much weaker than Dunkirk so it’s blasphemous that this got in over The Farewell. With that being said, with key wins at The Golden Globs and The Critics Choice last night, it appears Mr. Quentin Tarantino will go away with his 3rd win in this category.

Who should win?

BONG-HIVE LETS GET LOUD!!!!! Parasite is the best screenplay this year. Noah Baumbach gave Bong a run for his money but when a director can write so many different genres into one movie and have them all blend together to make such a satisfying movie, there is nothing better out there. But there is no justice in this world so.

Who should have been nominated?

Knives Out, Parasite, The Farewell, Marriage Story, Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

Nominees: The Irishman, Jojo Rabbit, Little Women, The Two Popes and Joker

Who will win?

I honestly have no idea!! At this point I’m just here for a good time! One would think the two front runners are Jojo Rabbit and Joker, but I just don’t know. This category is very unpredictable because each nominee (except The Two Popes), all have a legitamite shot at taking home The Oscar. But because I made a promise to predict a winner, I guess I’ll just say Jok-

Who should win?

Little Women. Again, Greta Gerwig reinvented the original novel into a fresh story playing with time and enhancing the experience of reading the novel. I said this about Saoirse’s performance but same goes for the movie: Little Women is a warm hug, and so is this screenplay. For someone who gave us that interaction between Laurie and young Amy, well then they deserve all the recognition possible. Greta is a beast, a once in a generation filmmaker that we’ll look back on one day and won’t be able to comprehend how we let her slip through The Academy cracks.

Who should have been nominated?

Little Women, The Irishman, Jojo Rabbit, Pain and Glory and Honey Boy

See that pain in Leo’s face? Imagine that, but with me and these nominations
