A Vigil, on flowers and life
Almost a year ago I was walking around Fort Greene Park on a random Tuesday in August, and I spotted a flower. The flower stood solitary in the unkempt field, its petals unfurling like delicate whispers in the breeze. Its slender stem, adorned with thorns, bore the weight of its existence with quiet grace. Each petal, a stroke of nature’s finest brush, held the secrets of the sun’s caress and the earth’s embrace.
In the simplicity of its form, there lay a profound beauty that transcended the chaos of the world. It was a testament to resilience, blooming despite the harshness of its surroundings. Its fragrance, subtle yet intoxicating, lingered in the air like a memory too sweet to forget.
To behold such a flower was to witness a fleeting moment of perfection in an imperfect world. It was a reminder that amidst life’s trials and tribulations, there existed pockets of serenity waiting to be discovered. And in that quiet contemplation, one found solace in the simple yet profound beauty of a single flower.

Wherein lies the conundrum: How can you meaningfully articulate the experience of being alive if you are only in tune with the broken clockwork of your own anxiety, the echo chamber of your own skull?
Life, with all its intricacies, wonders, and uncertainties, is undeniably short. It is a fleeting journey, a transient phenomenon, where every breath, every heartbeat, counts towards an inevitable end. In the grand scheme of the universe, the span of human existence is but a mere blip, a fraction of time so infinitesimal that it scarcely registers in the cosmic calendar. Yet, within this brief window of opportunity, lies the potential for boundless experiences, profound connections, and enduring legacies.
At the heart of the human condition lies an awareness of mortality. From the moment of birth, we are inexorably drawn towards our eventual demise. Each passing day serves as a poignant reminder of our limited time on this earth. Yet, far from being a cause for despair, this awareness can serve as a catalyst for living fully and authentically. By acknowledging the ephemeral nature of existence, we are compelled to seize the moment, to embrace opportunities with fervor, and to savor the richness of life’s tapestry.
One of the most profound aspects of human existence is the relationships we forge with others. Whether familial, platonic, or romantic, these connections imbue our lives with meaning and purpose. However, the transient nature of life underscores the importance of cherishing these relationships while we can. Time spent with loved ones is a precious commodity, not to be squandered or taken for granted. Every hug, every conversation, becomes a poignant reminder of the fleeting nature of human existence, urging us to cultivate deeper bonds and nurture meaningful connections.
In the pursuit of our dreams and aspirations, the brevity of life looms large as both a motivator and a constraint. The knowledge that our time on this earth is finite compels us to pursue our passions with vigor and determination. Yet, it also forces us to confront the reality of limited time and resources, prompting us to prioritize our goals and aspirations accordingly. Every decision we make, every path we choose to follow, is imbued with a sense of urgency, as we strive to make the most of our fleeting time on this earth.
At its core, the human experience is a quest for meaning and purpose. We grapple with existential questions, seeking to understand our place in the universe and the significance of our actions. Yet, in the face of life’s brevity, the search for meaning takes on added urgency. We are confronted with the impermanence of our existence, forced to reckon with the inevitability of our own mortality. And yet, it is precisely this awareness that lends our lives a sense of poignancy and profundity, inspiring us to seek out moments of beauty, moments of connection, that transcend the bounds of time itself.
Life is undeniably short, a fleeting journey through the vast expanse of time and space. Yet, within this brevity lies the potential for boundless experiences, profound connections, and enduring legacies. By embracing the impermanence of being, we can live more fully, love more deeply, and strive to leave a lasting impact on the world around us. For in the end, it is not the length of our lives that matters, but the depth of our experiences and the richness of our relationships that define our existence.
